A Blog by Chicken Wrangler Sara

One of my favorite things about children in general and grandchildren specifically is the wonder with which they view life.  Two years ago, we had a couple of spiders living in our canna lilies.

Before grandkids, I would have been terrified of these spiders. But as a Grandma, I see things with wonder.

Alex and Theo were visiting and thought the spiders were wonderful.

Theo called them “spider monkeys” – a product of spending lots of time at the zoo.  Alex wanted to name them Pancake and Waffle.

I checked on Pancake and Waffle each time I went to water my flower beds.  Eventually, they disappeared to wherever spiders go when they get tired of their current location.

This year I discovered a spider in our front flower bed.

There was a time when its presence would have prevented me from using the front door out of fear.  Now my first thought was “Alex and Theo would love this.”

I took a picture and sent it to them.

I named the spider French Toast.  We’ll see how long he hangs out.
