When I was in college, my parents bought me a music sweater for Christmas.  It is a cardigan, so I wear it every winter as my coat.  Living in Texas it is usually all I need.

I have never seen another one like it at all the music conventions I have been to through the years.

Over time, the button holes stretched out and it no longer stayed buttoned.  This year I decided to remedy that situation by replacing the buttons.

While I was working on it, I decided to remove the shoulder pads that had been popular when I got it in the 80s but now just got in the way.

Now my sweater stays buttoned, and I am not fighting the shoulder pads.

I’m ready for another 35 years of Texas winters!

This week has been quite pleasant here in Texas.  Last week was not.  We had the second snow storm of the season followed by ice. An event that had not happened in many decades.

We were warned and people took great pains to protect their chickens.  I was not one of those people.

I do care about my chickens but wasn’t willing to enclose the coop, put a heater in it or bring the flock inside.  I told them it would be cold and encouraged them to huddle up when the coop had icicles.

During the coldest days, I went out several times to make sure they had food and water.  It was cold enough that their water froze solid so I would pour hot water over it to thaw enough for them to drink.  A few hours later, it would be frozen again.

I tried to cover some of the duck pen when it started sleeting.  I used a big blue tarp which apparently was terrifying to the ducks.  They would not go near that corner of the pen.  I finally went back out in the sleet and took it down.  The ducks were much happier.  As soon as the duck pond started to thaw, the got in and swam around the chunks of ice.  Silly ducks!

I learned that the hoe I use for weeding works great for removing ice when I cleared a path across the back porch.  I was determined not to fall on my multiple trips to the chicken yard.

I am happy to report that I did not fall a single time.

And we did not lose any chickens or ducks.

I’m hoping that means we passed the test and do not have to repeat that experience ever again.

I’ll take the Texas summers over these crazy winter storms any day.

Texas is known for its crazy weather.  A couple of weeks ago it lived up to its reputation.

I was teaching piano lessons via Google Hangouts since we are still sheltering in place and a terrible storm broke out.  It made me glad none of my students were actually at my house.

When I finished teaching, I looked out the back window and saw a tree had fallen.

Fortunately it fell away from the house so there was no damage – just a lot of work.

It took a couple of days and three chain saws (the first two didn’t work) but we (mostly Matt) got it all cut apart, and I carted it to the front yard.

A couple of days later I noticed a chicken in the front bush.  Not a real chicken but one from my wind chime.

I went out and found the whole thing had blown off the hook.  That was some strong wind!  Fortunately only one of the chickens was broken.

The rest are back hanging outside the front door making their clanking sound.

Hopefully, the weather will be gentler for a while.

The weather in Texas has always been a little unpredictable. I’ve learned to carefully watch the forecast and then step outside to see what is actually happening.

Lately it has been warm and sunny – almost like Spring.  In fact our bluebonnets have started to bloom.

They were planted in 2015 and they have spread nicely.  We are hoping to cover that half of the yard.

This morning when I let the dogs out I was completely taken aback by the frigid air.  I knew it was going to get cold, but I thought it would be next week.

As I walked past the bluebonnets I thought “I hope they make it through this crazy Texas weather.”

I also hope I make it through.
